10 Summer Learning Tips

Dear passengers,

The school year is finished and a long period of holidays is ahead of you. I am aware that you are exhausted after nine months of intense work. However, summer is a good time to do all those things which we do not seem to have time to do along the hectic year. Besides, learning is not something that only occurs at school in a formal environment. Learning can be even more effective in informal paths which we tread just for pleasure.

So that you do not put aside all the English you have learnt and used during the course, here I come with a list of ten fun summer activities you can do to keep practising your English. The information has been gathered in an interactive infographic which you will find at the end of this post. Choose the tip you like best (you feel more comfortable with) and keep practising and learning actively.

Let´s get started!

01 - WATCH FILMS AND SERIES IN ENGLISH

I am a big fan of cinema. I think films are a good way to learn those expressions which are not in text books. I know it can be very hard to understand but try watching films with subtitles in English (not in Spanish). Your level of English will increase without you beeing aware of it. just in case you do not know how to do that, follow my instructions in THIS part of this website.

02 - KEEP A JOURNAL

Summer is a time for adventures, trips and much more.... Why not document all these new experiences in a journal. Memory is weak and only that which is written down is finally remembered.

03 - READ BOOKS

Finally, you have the time you need to sit comfortably and read those books you like. Where will you read them? On the beach? At the swimming pool? On the sofa at home? No more compulsory books till September. Learn about what you can do after reading a book in the infographic.

04 - READ THE NEWS

I know it may sound a bit difficult but DON´T panic! There is a webpage which provides you with the latest news at three different levels of difficulty. Choose the one that suits you best.

05 - LISTEN TO SONGS

Is this not what you do all day long? Pay attention to the lyrics, search them on the Internet, read them carefully, try to guess or look after the meaning of new unknown words. Say what your favourite songs mean to you.

06 - LISTEN TO THE RADIO

It was believed that video killed the radio star but they were wrong. Radio keeps you company and you can still do something else while you are listening to it. A good way to learn English while listening to the radio is the vaughan radio station (online or or your app)

07 - LISTEN TO AUDIOBOOKS

Do you feel lazy to read but still want a good story to delve into? Listen to people reading to you! Use your headphones while lying on the beach!

08 - DESIGN YOUR OWN WEBSITE or BLOG

Have you ever thought about starting your own blog or website. It has neven been easier to design a stunning personal page. 4th ESO students follow THIS tutorial to create their own electronic portfolio but you can use any other blog server. Get in the habit of writing and showing others how creative you are.

09 - PLAN YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY TRIP

Planning your holidays can be fun. Document all your plans.

Instagram is a popular social network among teenagers. Take photos of your summer experiences and share them on Instagram. But this time, write the comments and hashtags in English.
